e2v sponsors 2008 Student of the Year Award

e2v, the specialist developer and manufacturer of high technology components and sub-systems, was proud to sponsor ‘The e2v Award for the Best Electronic Engineering Student’ at the prestigious 2008 Science, Engineering & Technology (SET) student of the year awards, which took place at the Royal Lancaster hotel, London on 26th September.

Judging for all of the coveted trophies took place through the day on behalf of The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), with the panel for The e2v Award for the Best Electronic Engineering Student consisting of Carlos Huggins (e2v), Prof. Bernard Weiss (University of Surrey), Prof. Hugh McCann (University of Manchester), and David Nicoll (JTD Certax Ltd).

Three students were short listed for their exciting and innovative projects:  Kwee Guan Eng of Imperial College London for ‘The screen grid field effect transistor for sensing of biomolecules’,
Adam Mallion of the University of Bath for ‘Millimetre-wave radar antenna controller for airport security’ and Niall Oswold of the University of Bristol for ‘A “More-electric” formula 1 gearbox’.

Following deliberation by the judges, and after a champagne reception and celebratory dinner, the award ceremony began.

Keith Attwood, e2v’s CEO, announced that Niall Oswold had won The e2v Award for the Best Electronic Engineering Student.

After presenting the award to Niall, Keith said: ‘In these difficult economic times, it is more important than ever that we support, and encourage the development of, our engineering talent’, adding ‘in the end Niall’s idea stood out to the judges. It was original and innovative, which is a real achievement when considering the speed at which the formula 1 business moves forward with engineering firsts.”
